In a major announcement, the Income Tax Return Deadline 2025 has been extended by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The earlier deadline of July 31, 2025, for filing ITR for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26), is now revised to September 15, 2025. This move brings relief to millions of taxpayers across India, especially salaried individuals and those not requiring audit.
Key Reason for Extending the Income Tax Return Deadline 2025
According to Manu Agrawal, tax advocate and joint secretary of the Ramnagar Tax Bar Association, the extension of the Income Tax Return Deadline 2025 is due to significant changes in ITR forms introduced by the CBDT. These updates require additional time for system upgrades to ensure smoother processing.
Ramnagar Tax Bar President Pooran Pandey also confirmed that the CBDT made this decision to help taxpayers file their returns more accurately. “The revised forms contain multiple important changes, and the system needs more time to accommodate them,” he said.
CBDT further stated that the extension would help manage TDS credit reflection, system development, and the updated ITR forms. A formal notification is expected soon.
Who Is Affected by the New ITR Filing Date?
The new Income Tax Return Deadline 2025 primarily benefits salaried individuals and other taxpayers whose accounts are not subject to audit. These taxpayers will now have an extra 46 days to file their returns. However, if the return is not filed by September 15, 2025, a late fee of up to ₹5,000 may be imposed.
Previously, the Ramnagar Tax Bar Association, under the leadership of President Pooran Pandey, had submitted a memorandum to the Finance Ministry, urging for an extension due to the difficulties faced by taxpayers.
