Dehradun: The Uttarakhand Panchayat Election 2025 process has entered a state of uncertainty after a recent order by the Nainital High Court raised legal concerns, leaving the State Election Commission in a dilemma. The confusion primarily stems from the issue of duplicate entries of voters in both rural (panchayat) and urban electoral rolls.
Voter List Discrepancies Spark Legal Debate
The Uttarakhand Panchayat Election 2025 process officially began on July 2 with the filing of nomination papers. Scrutiny was carried out from July 7 to 9, and candidates were allowed to withdraw their nominations on July 10 and 11. However, during this period, concerns emerged about individuals having their names listed in both panchayat and urban body voter lists.
As per electoral norms, a person can only be registered in one voter list at a time. The issue was taken to the Nainital High Court, which questioned how such dual entries were allowed. This has now created a legal hurdle for the commission.
Legal Advice Sought on Panchayat Election Proceedings
Sushil Kumar stated that the commission is conducting the Uttarakhand Panchayat Election 2025 in accordance with the provisions of the Panchayati Raj Act. However, in light of the High Court’s observations, a detailed legal examination is being conducted. Certain aspects of the election process are under legal review to decide the way forward.
The situation is especially critical as election symbols are scheduled to be allotted on July 14 for the first phase of voting. Given the current legal ambiguity, the commission has assured that it will provide a clear update on Sunday.
Possible Courses of Action Before the Commission
- Seek clear directions from the High Court regarding the election process.
- Cancel nominations of candidates whose names appear in both rural and urban voter lists.
- Challenge the High Court’s order in the Supreme Court.
The outcome of these deliberations is expected to shape the next steps in the Uttarakhand Panchayat Election 2025 and bring much-needed clarity for candidates and voters alike.
